Thanksgiving Cocktail Hour: Autumn Spice Slammer

My many years as a bartender has served me well.  Aside from teaching me a ton about the bar and restaurant industry, I can also throw a pretty good party filled with lots of fun cocktails.  Since having the boys, our party hosting days have taken a back seat to play dates and juice boxes but I have never lost my love of a fun, creative cocktail.  This Thanksgiving we will be laying low but that does not mean we will not indulge in a little holiday cheer.

Like the Giggles, Gobbles and Gulps logo, I will be cooking in my kitchen, cocktail in hand, while my little yorkies stand by my feet waiting for me to drop a piece of turkey or some other Thanksgiving morsel.

I will certainly be making this little cocktail I created called the Autumn Spice Slammer.

Here is what you will need:

1 1/2 ounces brandy

3 ounces apple cider

2 ounces orange juice

1/2 triple sec

sugar

cinnamon

Apple, cut up into small chunks.  Reserve on slice of apple for garnish

Orange slice for garnish

Frozen cranberries (optional)

Mix equal parts sugar and cinnamon and place in a saucer. Rub the rim of a glass with the orange wedge and dip glass into the cinnamon-sugar mixture to rim the glass.  Reserve the orange.  In a shaker half filled with ice cubes , combine the brandy, apple cider, orange juice and triple sec.  Shake well.  Fill rimmed glass with ice and top with chopped apples.  Strain mixture over apples and ice and garnish with apple and orange slice.  Throw in a few frozen cranberries for a pop color (optional).

Cheers to a great Thanksgiving and oh, make sure you eat the apples at the end.  They are the best part! xoxo

Easiest Thanksgiving Dessert Recipe Ever – Pumpkin Squares

Remember the Williams-Sonoma event I attended last month?  Well, I have been saving this one recipe from the event.  I have been waiting for just the right time to share it with all of you.

The fantastic gang at Williams-Sonoma whipped up this dessert in minutes and with one taste I knew I would make this recipe  again and again.  I asked the gang at Williams-Sonoma if I could share it with all of you and, of course, they said yes.

I think one week before Thanksgiving sounds like perfect timing to me to finally reveal this amazing recipe.  This recipe will go down in Thanksgiving Day history.  It is easy and delicious.  What more could you ask for?  Here it goes …

I typed the recipe up for you and attached it  so you can either save the image onto your computer/phone or print it out and keep with the rest of your holiday recipes.  Trust me, you will want to keep this recipe in a safe place.  You will get requests to make these again.

Easiest-ever Pumpkin Squares

One of the tips I learned from the Williams-Sonoma gang is to purchase Saigon Cinnamon whenever you can.  What is Saigon Cinnamon you ask?  Exactly, right?  Cinnamon is cinnamon to me, but apparently there is much more to cinnamon then I thought.

Saigon Cinnamon (which you can find at Williams-Sonoma, just click here) is known as the finest, most flavorful cinnamon of all its varieties.  I happened to purchase some Saigon Cinnamon to check it out for myself.  When I opened the jar I noticed how rich the color was and how fragrant it smelled; definitely better than the cheap cinnamon I normally buy.   With all the holiday baking coming up, investing in a good cinnamon is an investment well made and will only add a better, more distinct quality to all of your holiday baking and desserts.  You should totally pick some up, I am glad I did.

Anyway, once you have cooked your Pumpkin Squares, with your specially added Saigon Cinnamon, this is how they should look.  Talk about delish!

Here’s another close-up shot.

Aren’t they pretty?

You have to give these little goodies a try.  They take minutes to pull together and with the busy holiday season, fast and simple is always the way to go.

Oh, and here’s a little tip.  You can substitute the pumpkin butter for apple butter or cranberry relish.  Keep everything else in the recipe the same and you can totally transform this recipe from season to season with ease.  I think the Cranberry Squares would be perfect for Christmas.  They rock!  Enjoy, xoxo.

Are you a Thirsty Girl? GGG Interviews THE Thirsty Girl, Leslie Sbrocco

Are you a Thirsty Girl? GGG Interviews THE Thirsty Girl, Leslie Sbrocco

Ever meet someone with a magnetic personality?

You know –  the kind of person who has a zest for life, where positive energy flows freely and their smile brightens up a room.

This is how I felt when I met Leslie Sbrocco.

I was standing in the beverage line at a food and wine show when I overheard all this excitement and laughter coming from this one beverage booth.  They were clearly having a party and I wanted in.  I made my way over the booth and asked,  “Who are you guys?”  Well, I learned, it was the Thirsty Girl booth and they are in the business of parties, laughter and plain old, enjoying life.

I mingled my way through the booth and was ultimately introduced to Leslie Sbrocco.  I didn’t know much about Leslie but something told me to ask her for an interview – which I did – and I dropped my card. Lucky for me (and you), she agreed to an interview.

Leslie Sbrocco, the ultimate Thirsty Girl

About Leslie Sbrocco

Leslie Sbrocco is an award-winning author, speaker, wine consultant, television host and founder of the new multi-media company, Thirsty Girl.  Leslie has made a living drinking wine, traveling, eating and having fun.  She is such an inspiration and gives me hope that if you keep doing what you love you really can have the life you always wanted.

Some of Leslie’s books include, Wine for Women:  A Guide to Buying, Pairing and Sharing Wine and The Simple and Savvy Wine Guide.  She is currently working on her third book, Adventures of a Thirsty Girl.  Leslie’s published works include Redbook, Family Circle, O the Oprah magazine, Woman’s Day and Good Housekeeping (swoon!)  She also hosts a PBS Series, Check Please!  for which she won a coveted James Beard award (one of my ultimate goals), two Tasty Awards and three Emmy Awards.  You may have also seen Leslie on NBC’s Today Show with Kathie Lee and Hoda.  In addition to her book and television work, Sbrocco is a sought-after speaker for high-profile events and corporate functions and a wine consultant for major companies such as Harry & David, the Kimpton Hotel Group and Virgin American Airlines.

GGG Interviews Leslie Sbrocco

After a little stalking (by me), a ton of emails and text messages back and forth, and an early morning wake-up call Leslie and I finally had a chance to chat at length where we talked about a ton of stuff  – life, Thirsty Girl, work and wine.  Leslie has created the kind of career we should all be so lucky to have – she truly loves her work and it shows.  If there is anyone who fits with the whole vibe of Giggles, Gobbles and Gulps – it’s Leslie.

Giggles, Gobbles and Gulps (GGG):  “How did you get involved with the wine and spirits industry?”

Leslie Sbrocco (LS): ” My real interest in wine did not peak until I moved to California.  While living in San Francisco, I started visiting lots of wineries and tasting as much as possible. That eventually led me to follow my passion and find a way to turn wine into a career.  I entered into the wine community and started working as a consultant in 1996.  I consider this my official start since this is when I received my first paycheck as a wine consultant.  I said to myself, ‘hey, I can make a living doing this,’  and have been doing just that for the past 15 years.”

Giggles, Gobbles and Gulps (GGG):  “You have two books with one in the works, tell me about them.”

Leslie Sbrocco (LS):  “My first book, ‘Wine for Women:  A Guide to Buying, Pairing and Sharing Wine‘ was written in 2003 and is the go-to guide for women who love wine.  My second book, ‘The Simple & Savvy Wine Guide: Buying, Pairing, and Sharing for All’ was written in 2006 is a portable guide for top wine picks.  I am working on my third book, ‘Adventures of a Thirsty Girl’ which sparked the creation of Thirsty Girl, a company I created along with my long-time business partner, Gail.”

Giggles, Gobbles and Gulps (GGG):  “What is Thirsty Girl?”

Leslie Sbrocco (LS): Thirsty Girl is a social group for women who love wine, food and fun.  It is this generation’s version of the ‘Red Hat Ladies.’  It’s a free, membership driven company where women can get together with other women in their community to connect and share their passions and explore their dreams.  It’s all about life and how to drink it up.”

GGG: “What made you create Thirsty Girl?  How did you come up with its concept?’

LS:  “The concept of Thirsty Girl really came from my book, ‘Adventures of a Thirsty Girl.’  I would start to tell people about my book and  these funny stories about my life and my adventures in the wine world.  After hearing about the book people would respond with, ‘I’m a Thirsty Girl‘ and it just took on a life of its own.  We realized Thirsty Girl was more than just a book title.  From there we started the company and it’s been going for about two and a half years now.”

GGG:  “Tell me about the typical ‘Thirsty Girl”

LS: “Thirsty Girls can be anyone.  We have women in our community from all ages to all parts of the United States.  We have chapter locations in cities such as Boston, Seattle, Denver and Chicago.  The women span all generations but our sweet spot is most likely in the 28-48 year old age range.  We have industry people in our community and those outside of the wine industry.  There are corporate and professional members, entrepreneurs, stay-at-home moms and home-based businesses.  We are a community of women.  We are driven by women and we respond to what women want, whether it be events, education or products.  It is all about wine and the lifestyle.”

GGG:  “What happens once someone signs up to become a Thirsty Girl?”

LS: “Women can sign up to be part of the community at www.thirstygirl.com.  From there they receive a confirmation and become part of the on-line community.  If they have a Chapter already established in their area they can link up with that Chapter and attend regular events right in their community.  If a Chapter does not exist, they can start one.  We have all the information they need to start a Chapter right on our website.  It’s really a lot of fun. ”

Giggles, Gobbles and Gulps (GGG):  “So many people feel intimidated when it comes to wine.  How can someone improve their Wine IQ?”

Leslie Sbrocco (LS): “The big key to getting smarter about wine is to taste, taste, taste.  Hold wine tastings with your friends and discover the nuances of wine.  Follow my tips on hosting a wine party or forming a group. Then learn how to taste like a pro:

  • Step One:  Put together your group and pick a regular meeting date.  My tasting club meets once a month.
  • Step Two:  Set a budget and pick a theme.  Have everyone buy a bottle in a certain price range or chip in money and the host buys all the bottles.  Chardonnay is a great place to begin because there are so many options for the themes such as wines that say California on the label, cool weather wines or Sonoma and Napa nights.
  • Step Three:  When people arrive the host should bag the bottles or cover with foil and number them.  This is called blind tasting and it helps you focus on the wine without any preconceived ideas of place, price or producer.
  • Step Four:  Set out spit buckets, which can anything from paper cups to plastic buckets and glasses.  I use kid’s sand pails at my house
  • Step Five:  Make sheets with the following information for each wine which you will fill out while blind tasting:  Wine #, Color, Aromas, Flavors, Overall Impression.  Then, make a second set of sheets to fill out once each wine is unbagged to include:  Name of producer, Type of Wine, Country/Region, Year, Cost and Goes Great With
  • Step Six:  Put out some nibbles and start smelling, spitting and tasting.

Also, check out two of my favorite videos to learn more about tasting, pairing and enjoying wine.”

Giggles, Gobbles and Gulps (GGG):  “Those were some great tips. So, what are your top five well-priced wines for the holidays?”

Leslie Sbrocco (LS): “Here are my top five well-priced wines for the holidays.”

Segura Viudas Brut Rerserva Cava, Spain $10 — A crisp, dry-styled bubbly from northeastern Spain that is impressive enough to give as a gift but affordable enough to pour at parties.

Kris Pinot Gris, Delle Venezie, Italy $10 — A refreshingly juicy white that pairs with crab, salads, fresh cheeses and more. It’s not complex, just easy sipping.

Irony Pinot Noir, Monterey, California $15 — Pinot is the flexible red going as easily with fish as it does with meat. This is an all-purpose wine that will please all.

Catena “Alamos” Malbec, Mendoza, Argentina $15 — A hearty red that offers succulence and dark berry fruit with a kick of spice. An ideal partner for roast beef, aged cheeses and rich soups.

Giggles, Gobbles and Gulps (GGG):  “You’ve been so great to talk to and so inspirational.  Lastly, what can others learn from your success?”

Leslie Sbrocco (LS): “I drink wine for a living.  You can do anything you want to do.  All you need to ask yourself is, ‘what do I want to do’ and ‘how do I get there?’  Once you have  the answers to these two questions you can do anything.

I can’t thank Leslie enough for taking time out of her crazy-busy schedule to talk with me.  Not once did Leslie ask the typical questions I get asked when I make a request – How many followers do you have?  What are your blog stats?  She truly wanted to share some of what she learned through her own ‘Adventures of  a Thirsty Girl,’ and continues to spread her message on Life, drink it up.

Malt Monday’s Beer Review of the Week: Blue Point Brewing Company Blueberry Ale

Blue Point Brewing Company Blueberry Ale

Style: Specialty beer, Fruit

Alcohol by Volume (ABV):4.6%

Calories: 138

Price: $1.89/bottle

I had a chance to attend the Philadelphia PA Beer Fest this weekend and taste some amazing beers.  I noticed a large presence of fruit-style beers which was slightly surprising for a Beer Fest.  I always thought of a Beer Fest as a very manly thing and fruit beers aren’t the most masculine.  There were some nice surprises at the PA Beer Fest and I definitely found some gems I plan to share with you for future Malt Monday posts.

Present at the 2012 PA Beer Fest was Blue Point Brewing Company based out of Patchogue, Long Island New York.  At the show, Blue Point Brewery featured their Toasted Lager, White IPA and their Hoptical Illusion IPA which were all tasty in their own respective ways, however, for this week;s Malt Monday review  I opted to showcase their Blueberry Ale which was not part of the PA Beer Fest tasting.

Since I leave near the town known as the “Blueberry Capital of the World”  and I happen to have two, yes two, blueberry bushes in my garden I can refer to myself as a blueberry expert, right?  Right!

Blue Point Brewery Company’s Blueberry Ale is their top-selling specialty fruit beer.  According to Blue Point Brewery Company’s site, the “Blueberry Ale offers an unusual twist on brewing that turns out to be just perfect. A wonderful blend of fresh blueberries matched with a thirst quenching distinctive ale.”    Brewed with 100% American ingredients the company states 132 lbs of blueberries are added to each special batch.

A nice straw-colored ale, this beer produced a significant amount of foam when poured into this glass.  The foam left very little lacing and didn’t interfere with the overall taste of the beer.  The blueberry flavor hits you immediately but it is not overpowering and stays present throughout the entire beer.  Very tasty, light, crisp and refreshing with hardly any noticeable alcohol.  It is easy drinking, for sure.

There are a couple of things that come to mind when thinking about this beer:  good summer beer,  easy to drink and a nice choice for the ladies or those not overly fond of beer.  Even my husband, who hated nearly every beer he tasted at the PA Beer Fest,  liked this beer so that has to tell you something.

Blue Point Brewery Company’s Blueberry Ale is GGG approved, for sure.   I will be buying this lovely, little beer again.  Cheers!

OMG!!! We reviewed TXT Cellars Wine and had a GR8 time. LOL!!!

While at the TASTE Philadelphia Festival of Food,Wine and Spirits I found out about these new, fun, edgy brand of wines called TXT Cellars.  A 2010 report shows that 72 percent of adults communicate via text messaging.  As an avid user of text messaging, I was immediately drawn to the brand and its concept and had to learn more.

TXT Cellars is based on the story of T. Brickman, who developed a line of everyday wines but could not come up with a name for his brand.  Brickman provided samples to a friend and later texted the friend, “what do u think?”  The friend replied “OMG, good stuff,” and the brand name “TXT Cellars” was born.

The line was launched in September of 2011 with four wines:  TXT Cellars OMG!!! Chardonnay, TXT Cellars LOL!!! Riesling, TXT Cellars LMAO!!! Pinot Grigio and TXT Cellars WTF!!! Pinot Noir.  The brand later expanded in April 2012 with two additional wines, TXT Cellars GR8!!! Cabernet Sauvignon and TXT Cellars CYA!!! Shiraz, for a total of six varieties.   All wines are young, fruity and easy to drink.  Available in 750ml format with a suggested retail price of $7.99.  Most places I looked had the wine for sale at the $9.99 price target.

According to the brand’s company, Vision Wine & Spirits, LLC, “the concept was to develop an unpretentious brand of everyday wines which consumers, especially millenials, could easily relate to.  The wines are light, fruity and easy to drink.  It is a wine that isn’t meant to swirl around in your glass and sniff but to enjoy with friends and ‘LOL’.”

The wines are part of Vision Wines & Spirits, LLC, which is based out of Secaucus, New Jersey.  Most recently, the company launched an online responsibility campaign petitioning consumers to sign a pledge on its website that they will not drink and drive or text and drive.  The company felt it was important to balance the levity of the brand with the serious message that neither texting nor drinking goes with driving.

To test TXT Cellars wines out for myself I gathered a few “Giggles Girls” together for a wine and sushi night at our favorite sushi spot.   The “Giggles Girls” included me, and my close friends Kelly, Alice and Liana (who was a little late and didn’t get to taste all six wines).

Kelly and Alice tend to gravitate more towards white wine selections and Liana and I are red wine fans so it was a nice mix of testers and tasters.  Of note, while we all enjoy our glass of wine now and then, none of the tasters consider themselves to be wine aficionados.

Here is what we had to say about each wine and the order in which we drank them:

  • TXT Cellars LMAO!!! Pinot Grigio (ABV:  11.5%) Straw colored with a light crisp taste.  Alice thought this wine was very sweet but drinkable.  Kelly thought LMAO!!! tasted a little like a Riesling.  She was impressed by the lightness of the wine saying, “I don’t even feel like I am drinking.”   I liked it given the fact I don’t normally like white wine.  LMAO!!! was Kelly’s favorite.
  • TXT Cellars LOL!!! Riesling (ABV:  9.5%)  Pale color with green hinting this wine was a nice balance of light flavors.  Alice liked it and thought it would make a nice dessert wine.  Kelly gave this one a thumbs down but noted that she does not normally enjoy Rieslings.  I thought LOL!!! was very sweet but still very drinkable.  LOL!!! was Alice’s favorite.
  • TXT Cellars OMG!!! Chardonnay (ABV:  11.5%) A pale yellow wine with nice, fruity flavors.  Kelly thinks Chardonnays are normally hard to drink but she liked this chardonnay for someone who normally dislikes this style of wine.  Alice agreed and thought it was good and unlike traditional chardonnay.  I really like this one too and could see myself purchasing this Chardonnay if I ever wanted to enjoy a nice, light wine.  This reminds me of a summer wine.
  • TXT Cellars GR8!!! Cabernet Sauvignon (ABV:  13%) A bright, ruby-red wine with fruity undertones.  Kelly described it as not bad.  Alice thought it was a little strong and I agreed.  This one was most similar to the types of wines I normally enjoy.  GR8!!! was my favorite.
  • TXT Cellars WTF!!! Pinot Noir  (ABV:  11%)  As a regular user of ‘WTF’ in my daily communications I was excited to try this wine.  Light in color, this wine had a nice sweetness which almost mimicked grape juice.  I liked this one a lot.  Liana arrived by this time and was able to try this one.  Her response, “It’s good, I like it.”  Kelly thought this one was good and very easy to drink for a red.  Alice thought it was sweet and claimed she didn’t feel like she was drinking wine.  WTF!!! was Liana’s favorite.
  • TXT Cellars CYA!!! Shiraz  (ABV:  12%) Very deep in color this wine was the strongest of the bunch.  Alice thought this was the truest representation of a red wine.  Kelly felt warm and tingly after drinking this wine and Liana thought this one was a little too strong for her. I also thought it was strong and not my favorite of the bunch.

All in all, we thought TXT Cellars wines were easy to drink and fun to enjoy with friends.  We had a great time talking about the wines and their respective names.  We even got into creating our own “ad campaign” for the wines.

Kelly and Alice try to make an LOL to represent the LOL!!! Riesling.

And, this is how the night ended!  Leave it to good ole’ Kelly to end the night with a LMAO!!! moment.

Kelly being silly with the TXT Cellars wines

Thank you to Vision Wine and Spirits, LLC and TXT Cellars for giving Giggles, Gobbles and Gulps the chance to review their product.  CYA!!!
